FIFA has warned the South African government over Fraud

Posted on 10:48 AM by Unknown
Fifa, world football's governing body, have written to the South African government warning them against a judicial inquiry into the recent match-fixing scandals, saying the matter should be handled by the country's football association.

Several of South Africa's warm-up matches before they hosted the 2010 World Cup were found to have been fixed, which led to the brief suspension of senior South African Football Association (Safa) officials, including its president Kirsten Nematandani.
South Africa's Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) recommended a judicial commission of inquiry but Fifa warned them of possible consequences should the government be seen to be intervening in football matters.

South Africa's sports minister Fikile Mbalula told local media he would travel to Fifa headquarters in Zurich next week to discuss the issue with world football's governing body.
"Sascoc have made a recommendation to us that we must go ahead with a judicial commission of inquiry into the matter," Mbalula said.

"Match-fixing is about fraud, corruption and mismanagement. There is a rule of law in South Africa. Where there are suspicions, they must be investigated. Safa must understand that you can't be a referee and player at the same time," he said.

Safa vice president Danny Jordaan told the Reuters news agency that his organisation had already asked police to investigate the matter.

Nematandani and four other top officials were briefly suspended in December following a report from Fifa, about the alleged rigging of four matches in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup. The Fifa investigation discovered that Safa was infiltrated by convicted Singaporean match-fixer Wilson Perumal and his Football 4U organisation.

Brasil 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup: Blatter Meets Brasil's Sport Minister

Posted on 8:21 AM by Unknown

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter,  FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke and Brazil’s Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo spoke with the media following their meeting to discuss issues related to the organisation of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup™.

The organisational meeting, which lasted for two hours, involved divisions of the Local Organising Committee and the FIFA divisions; serving to update members of the FIFA Executive Committee and the Organising Committee.

It was later announced that the Final Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup will take place at Costa do Sauipe in Bahia at 13.00 local time (17.00 CET) on 6 December 2013.

FIFA President, Joseph S. Blatter
It has been a pleasure and honour to receive Aldo Rebelo today at the Home of FIFA. And we are very happy how the population of Brazil is receiving this World Cup. I’m sure that the five time winners will present an outstanding competition in 2014. It’s a question of trust and confidence – and from FIFA’s side, it’s totally there. We still have more than a year to go and I am confident that through its economic power and strength of will, Brazil will be ready and deliver a wonderful World Cup.

But first we look forward to the Confederations Cup, the Festival of Champions. I will be present from the beginning until the end of that tournament and I will visit all the Host Cities for Brazil 2014 and meet all of their governors. I want to reiterate to the government of Brazil, especially the President, my respects and friendship.

FIFA Secretary-General, Jérôme Valcke
We received an update on the six FIFA Confederations Cup stadiums and also the six additional FIFA World Cup stadiums. We have agreed that the deadline of December 2013 is key for  the preparation of the FIFA World Cup. We need time to be ready to welcome the thousands of journalists and fans in June 2014, so all the facilities and infrastructures can be fully utilised. The partnership between the Brazilian Government, the Local Organising Committee and FIFA is a strong and full one.

Aldo Rebelo, Brazil Sports Minister
The Salvador stadium will be delivered next week, with the President being present for that inauguration. The other stadiums will also be delivered within the agreed timeframe, with the test events already scheduled. I think the presence of the FIFA President during the Confederations Cup will be extremely important, so he can see with his own eyes the preparations for  in all twelve World Cup host cities and the work which has already been done there.

We have made progress, due to the spirit of co-operation and harmony that exists between the Federal Government, the regional governments, the municipalities, the LOC and FIFA.  The preparations for the World Cup will meet the expectations of the organisers and, of course of Brazil.  We, the federal government, reaffirm our commitment to work with the host cities to have the other six FIFA World Cup stadia ready by December 2013 as agreed with FIFA.  I am confident that we will meet all the challenges and fulfil the promises. This is a vital event for Brazil. We’re delighted and honoured to be able to host it.

Liverpool defeated Aston Villa at home

Posted on 8:13 AM by Unknown
Aston Villa Park is the first Premier League away ground that Liverpool have recorded 10+ win.

Liverpool's skipper, Steven Gerrard scored the winning goal during today's match.

Aston Villa were left in deep relegation trouble yet again after Liverpool fought back from a goal down to seal victory at Villa Park.

Paul Lambert's side took the lead when Gabriel Agbonlahor's lay-off found Christian Benteke, who powered home.

Liverpool equalised shortly after the restart when Jordan Henderson dinked the ball past the reach of Brad Guzan.

And Steven Gerrard scored the winner from the spot after Nathan Baker brought down Luis Suarez in the area.

Footballers Celebrating their birthdays this Month

Posted on 7:48 AM by Unknown

We present to you with some of the biggest names in football who will be celebrating their birthdays over the coming week.

31. Eddie Johnson (29) is one of the American national team’s most experienced front men, having previously taken part in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™. Currently involved in the Stars and Stripes’ quest to reach Brazil 2014, he also played at the Copa America and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007, emerging victorious in the latter competition. At the outset of his career, he participated in the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, before finishing as top scorer at the U-20 equivalent in the UAE two years later. At club level, the pacey striker started out in the MLS with FC Dallas and then Kansas City Wizards, before moving to English outfit Fulham. Following loan spells at Cardiff City, Aris (Greece) and Preston North End, he returned to the USA to join Seattle Sounders last season. Johnson has won the MLS Comeback Player of the Year Award on two occasions, in 2007 and 2012.

1. Clarence Seedorf (37) is one of the most successful footballers to emerge from the Netherlands, having amassed a host of medals and awards during his career. He represented the Oranje at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and at three UEFA European Championships in a row between 1996 and 2004. The athletic midfielder came through the ranks at Ajax, establishing himself in the senior XI and helping the club to win two Dutch League titles, one Dutch Cup, two Dutch Super Cups and a UEFA Champions League crown. He then signed for Sampdoria, where his strong performances attracted the interest of Real Madrid. The Dutchman significantly expanded his footballing CV in the Spanish capital, securing a Liga championship, a Spanish Super Cup, a UEFA Champions League title and an Intercontinental Cup. A subsequent transfer to Inter Milan was followed by a move to city rivals AC Milan, where Seedorf would spend a highly productive ten years, claiming two Serie A titles, an Italian Cup, two Italian Super Cups, two further UEFA Champions League titles and the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament at which he finished just behind Kaka in the voting for the adidas Golden Ball award. At the start of this season, he surprised many across the world of football by putting pen to paper with Brazilian side Botafogo, with whom he lifted the Guanabara Cup in mid-March.

2. Teddy Sheringham (47) was instrumental in Manchester United’s amazing last-gasp comeback against Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, scoring the equalising goal before heading the ball down to team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who secured a dramatic victory for the Red Devils. Sheringham’s time at Old Trafford coincided with a golden era for United, as they also landed three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a Charity Shield and an Intercontinental Cup over a four-year period. The skilful striker won second division titles with Millwall and Swedish outfit Djurgardens, and also enjoyed spells at Aldershot Town, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, where he finished as Premier League top goalscorer, before he headed north to Manchester. After leaving United, he re-signed for Tottenham, before going on to play for Portsmouth, West Ham, with whom he reached the FA Cup final, and Colchester United. On the international stage, he donned an England jersey at UEFA EURO 1996 and at two FIFA World Cups, in 1998 and 2002. Sheringham was named English Footballer of the Year in 2001.

3. Stephanie Cox (27) competed at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™ with the United States, losing out in the final, and at the 2007 tournament in China, where she had to content herself with a third-place finish. The solid defender also earned a gold medal at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing. In her youth, she appeared at two FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup tournaments (Thailand 2004 and Russia 2006), finishing third and fourth respectively. In terms of domestic football, Cox starred for Los Angeles Sol and Boston Breakers, before committing herself to Seattle Sounders at the start of the season.

4. Emerson (37) made a significant contribution to the Brazilian national side, appearing at France 1998 and Germany 2006. He also held aloft the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 1999 Copa America. Having turned professional at Gremio, he picked up winners’ medals in the Brazilian League, Brazilian Cup (twice), Rio Grande do Sul State Championship (twice), Copa Libertadores and Recopa Sudamericana. He gained his first taste of European football at Bayern Leverkusen, prior to joining Roma, with whom he attained the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup. A move to Juventus saw the combative defensive midfielder enjoy two Italian League triumphs, although one of those was later revoked due to the Calciopoli affair. Emerson tried his luck with Real Madrid, securing a Spanish Championship ten months later, before being transferred to AC Milan, where he hoisted the UEFA Super Cup and the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup. He then returned to his homeland to see out his career with Santos.

5. Thomas Hitzlsperger (31) was a member of the Germany squads that earned third place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany and at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, and that lost the final of EURO 2008. As a youngster, the central midfielder played at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 2004 UEFA European U-21 Championship. Having come through the ranks at English side Aston Villa, he signed for Stuttgart, where he claimed the Bundesliga title. Hitzlsperger has gone on to wear the colours of Lazio, West Ham, Wolfsburg and Everton, the club he joined in October 2012.

6. Diana Matheson (29) helped Canada to emerge as a true force in the female game, participating in the last three FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. At USA 2003, she and her team-mates finished fourth in what was the Canucks’ maiden appearance at the prestigious event. The speedy midfielder has also enjoyed Olympic success, reaching the quarter-finals at Beijing 2008 and winning a bronze medal at London 2012. Matheson turned out for Toronto Inferno and Ottawa Fury in Canada, and for LSK Kvinner in Norway. She recently signed a contract with Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League.

The club will face the current Barclays Premier League champions at the Busch Stadium, home of the Cardinals MLB team in St Louis, on May 23 with a 7.30pm local time kick-off.

African Youth Championship 2013: Nigeria received a bronze medal

Posted on 3:24 AM by Unknown

Nigeria made amends for missing out on defending their title by beating Mali 2-1 to finish with bronze at the 2013 Orange CAF U-20 Championship.

By reaching the semi-finals both teams qualified for FIFA U-20 World Cup and for the greater part of the match cantered their way through the stages with odd flashes of constructive football here and there during a match played at Ahmed Zabana stadium in Oran.

A brace from striker Aminu Umar ensured that it was The Flying Eagles and not The Eaglets who claimed third spot in the competition.
Mali scored a late goal on 87th minute through Tiekoro Keita to make it an interesting end but it was Nigeria’s night.

It was an Adama Niane goal that won it for Mali the last time these two meet and the same striker had the first meaningful chance of the game with a header from a corner kick.

The Nigerian defenders manage to scrabble if off the goal line.
Nigeria then went to the other end of the pitch and good interchange play between Chidi Osuchukwu and Abdullahi Shehu released Abduljeleel Ajagun who shot was on target but well saved by Ali Yirango in goal for Mali.

Perhaps the best action in the first half came in the 40th minute from impressive Abdoulaye Keita who picked up striker Hamidou Traore with a delightful 40m long ball into the box.

Traore took it down well with his right foot before shooting with the other only to see Nigerian goalkeeper, Jonah Usman beat away the shot.

Keita was not finished and delighted the crowd a minute later when he ran past his marker before letting a rocket of a shot that again needed Usman at his best to prevent Mali taking the lead.

In the 72nd minute an intelligent cut back from a free kick picked up Ajagun on the edge of box, while everyone was expecting a cross.

Ajagun’s well taken shot was blocked on goal line but Aminu Umar reacted quickest to stab home the opening goal of the match.

Boasted by the goal Nigeria were in ascendancy and on 82nd minute Umar scored his and Nigeria’s second from the penalty spot.

It Umar who was fouled by Boubacar Diarra as he jumped for a high ball in the box. The striker picked himself up and sent Yirango the wrong way but Mali refused to lie down and mounted a late charge.

On 87th minute winger Tiekoro Keita scored after keeper Usman had spilt a shot.

It was Mali in a hurry to get an equalizer and it almost came a minute from the end when pressure on Nigeria goal left Hamidou Traore with a chance to score but he hurried his attempt and it sailed over the bar and Nigeria then hung on to finish third

Florence Omagbemi should be the next Super Falcons Coach – Ayo Omidiran

Posted on 10:36 AM by Unknown

The deputy chairman of the house committee of sport and the former Nigeria national team coordinator, Ayo Omidiran told sportdiva.net that Florence Omagbemi should be considered for the Falcons job.

Ms Omidiran explained that during her tenure as the chairman for women football development in Nigeria there were few female coaches that are qualified for the job but things has really changed today, she said ‘When I was the chairman for women football development we had only male coaches we didn’t push for a woman technical crew because of their level of experience’

She said further that ‘now things are different, we have a lot of them (Female Coaches)’
When sportdiva.net asked her to nominate a qualified female coach in Nigeria, Honourable Ayo Omidiran said ‘I have worked with Florence Omagbemi during the U20 female national team camping I saw her work and I think certainly she’s capable of handling the female national team as the head coach’

‘that’s not say others are not qualified compare to the others that I have seen that worked and I have seen also the way the girls reacted and relate to her, they listen to her and they bond well’

She quickly defends her statement by handling all decisions over to the Nigeria football federation. She said ‘however the decision to choose a coach depends squarely on the Nigeria football federations technical committee let’s see how things work out’ she concluded

The Nigeria Football Federation will soon announce the names of the head coach and assistants of the super falcons.

Former head coach, Kadiri Ikhana resigned after his failure to play at the semi-finals of the last African women championship in Equatorial Guinea.

One on One Exclusive interview with Andre Iniesta

Posted on 7:14 AM by Unknown
In the minds of many in the game, Andres Iniesta is nothing short of the perfect player. Cerebral, elegant and decisive, not only does the versatile midfielder make both Barcelona and Spain tick, he also scored the most important goal in the latter’s history – the firmly struck right-foot shot that sank the Netherlands in the Final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
 Iniesta: The secret is stability
Ten years on from breaking through on the international stage when Spain finished second at the UAE 2003 edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, this native of Fuentealbilla in Albacete is showing no signs of letting up. Indeed, one of the stars of La Selección’s triumph at UEFA EURO 2012 could recently be seen sharing the podium at 7 January’s FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

he spoke at the event in Zurich, Iniesta spoke about what inspires him, his childhood heroes and upcoming challenges for club and country.

Andres, you’re now a regular at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala. What goes through your mind at events like these?
Andres Iniesta: Nice thoughts, good sensations. When you think about it in the cold light of day, it makes you really happy to be shortlisted for prizes like these, or to be included in the [FIFA/FIFPro] World XI. It’s lovely when people value what you’re doing. It’s definitely something special.

Plenty of experts have said “Messi might score the goals but it’s Iniesta who makes Barça tick”. What would you say to that?
I think a great team comes about when each person plays to his full potential. Barça are better with Leo in the team and Leo plays better with Barça. Football isn’t an individual sport, it’s a team game in which individuals stand out much more when everyone’s pulling together. I play better when Leo’s there and he’s a better player alongside us and that’s what matters: the fact we all feel we’ve a part to play in doing things right.

Messi, for his part, said you would also have been a worthy winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2012…
Well… (laughs) It’s nice of Leo to say so, particularly since he’s a team-mate of mine who I’ve known for a long time and who plays alongside me. It’s very nice of him. Even though we were both on the podium for this award, I didn’t consider him a rival, not for an instant. He’s still my team-mate. I was as happy for Leo to win his fourth Ballon d’Or [as if I’d won it myself].

Looking back over a year in which you were also voted the 2011/12 UEFA Best Player in Europe, what was your most memorable moment?
The EURO, maybe, because of how important that championship was to the team and because no other national side has achieved what we did [in winning the EURO, then the FIFA World Cup then the EURO once more]. And well, it’s like I always say: more than anything else, I most enjoy the good feeling that comes with playing well, feeling happy and improving every day. That for me is what means the most, year after year.

In a recent interview you said your performances on the pitch reflect how you’re feeling off it. Given the way you’re playing, things must be going very well for you outside of football?
The secret lies in the stability I’ve got outside the game, with my wife, my daughter, my family and the people around me. But everybody’s different. There will be players who might not be having the best of times off the field, but once they get on the pitch it’s the ideal place to get everything out their system. But, in my case, I think that the two worlds are very closely linked.

Unusually, going on recent years’ hauls, Barcelona only won one trophy in 2012. Does that feel like scant reward for your performances?
I wouldn’t say that, I’d focus on the fact we won the Copa del Rey and came very close in both La Liga and the Champions League. In sport and at Barça, we’re always expected to fight for every title and that’s what we did. And we’ve gone all the way in other years, even though we fell short this time. In 2012 we were right on the verge of where we needed to be to win things, but we just fell a little short. This year we’ll use that as an incentive to fight for every trophy once more.

It was a strange year off the field, what with Pep Guardiola’s departure and the health concerns of Eric Abidal and Tito Vilanova. How did such issues affect the close-knit Azulgrana squad?
Guardiola leaving is just something that happens: he and the club reached that agreement and so it’s something normal, natural and which happens a lot at every club. The other two things you mention were very tough to deal with. They were very tough to live through, particularly for them [Abidal and Vilanova] and their families. The only thing we’ve tried to do is be by their sides, try and find strength from somewhere and give them our support, so that little by little they can get well and rejoin the group again. Part of why the squad’s so vibrant and so determined to do well is down to those difficult blows we’ve had to overcome.

Could you see yourself ever pulling on another club’s shirt?
I’ve always said that my dream and my ambition would be to hang up my boots at the club I’ve been with since I was 12, a club that’s given me practically everything. So obviously, leaving doesn’t even cross my mind right now because I’m in the best place I could ever be. That said, it’ll be my performances that decide how long I carry on. The day that I don’t feel I can give 100 per cent [I’ll stop], because I wouldn’t want to cheat the club. That’s only logical.

Turning to the national team and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013: is the squad doubly determined to win the trophy after slipping up at South Africa 2009?
Yes, yes... in football you often get the chance to win something again, or win something that you’d previously lost. So, this year will give us the opportunity to do that and that’ll be our goal when we go over there. But we won’t forget we’ll be up against other national teams that want to win too. There’ll be the host nation, former world champions and on top of that it’ll be in Brazil, which should provide a very special backdrop. It’ll be great.

What’s your verdict on Spain’s hopes of reaching Brazil 2014? The home draw with France made the qualifying group that much tighter, didn’t it?
Yes, it’s true. Even though we always say it, it’s true that nowadays it’s very difficult to win games, whichever national team you’re playing against. And when it comes to France, even more so. When you’re not quite on top of your game, the opposition can beat you or hold you to a draw, and that’s what happened against France. But we’re fully confident that we’re capable of staying top, seeing our games through and, why not, going and winning in France [on 26 March]. The squad’s got what it takes to do that.

You’re currently an idol to many youngsters, but who did you look up to when you were a boy?
When I was little I always used to watch [Pep] Guardiola and [Michael] Laudrup really closely. They were the two players I most wanted to be like, and I’d try to do the things they did. Then, as time goes by and when everything goes well, the lads who are the age you were back then are now watching you. That means that you’re doing the right things.

It’s a lot of responsibility too, particularly given the media interest in every aspect of players’ lives. How do you handle it?
Well, of course, there are two sides to the coin aren’t there? Both the good and bad sides are taken to extremes. But you have to take it in your stride, as it’s part of the job. You have to remember that we’re not just football players, that we’ve got a lot of people watching us, who want to be like us and try to do what we do. It’s a big responsibility.

One last question, Andres: when you made a toast with your loved ones on New Year’s Eve, what did you wish for 2013 to bring?
Good health. If I can train and play well, that’s what’s most important. As for the rest, things will go better or worse, depending on what fate has in store. But, more than anything, I want to stay healthy so I can enjoy what I do on and off the pitch.

Vincent Kompany bought a football club

Posted on 7:04 AM by Unknown
While most footballers splash their cash on women, cars and other flashy goods, Vincent Kompany has opted to buy the struggling Belgian third division side FC Bleid.

With a record of two wins and 19 defeats from their 25 matches so far this season, the Brussels club sit rock bottom of the D3B division and 16 points from safety.

But that has not deterred Kompany, who sees the investment as a social project as well as a footballing one.
Aside from basic philanthropy, the Manchester City captain is using this as a “social commitment towards the youngsters of Brussels”.

On a new website, westartfromscratch.com, Kompany outlined his reasons for buying into FC Bleid and his plans to bring the club forward for the good of the region.

The Brussels side will be renamed, will have a new logo selected as well as new kits and a new slogan.
And Kompany encouraged ordinary members of the public, whether fans of the club or not, to come forward and put their ideas towards the project, beginning with suggestions for a new club name.

It is not yet known how much weight in cash Kompany has put behind FC Bleid, or how much hands-on time he will spend on the club.

NFF writes FIFA, CAF on tricky June duel

Posted on 9:28 AM by Unknown

The Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday wrote to world
football-governing body, FIFA and the African body, CAF over tricky
2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying games and the FIFA Confederations Cup,
all in the month of June.

FIFA had last week adjusted Nigeria’s matches, meaning the Super
Eagles would play Kenya in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 5 and take on
Namibia in Windhoek on Wednesday, June 12, before flying to the FIFA
Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil. Nigeria became Africa’s
flagbearer at the tournament following triumph at the Africa Cup of
Nations in South Africa last month.

“We have fully appraised our priorities and wish that either of the
following options be seriously considered: 1) That the matches in our
African qualifying Group F (Kenya Vs Nigeria; Malawi Vs Namibia and;
Namibia Vs Nigeria; Malawi Vs Kenya) be played on the SAME DATES of
Wednesday, 5th June and Wednesday, 12th June, 2013 respectively.

2)That all the matches be reverted to the ORIGINAL DATES of Saturday,
8th June and Saturday, 15th June, 2013 respectively,” the letter,
signed by NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu, read, inter
alia.

It means the Super Eagles would either play Kenya’s Harambee Stars and
Namibia’s Brave Warriors at the same time and day as Malawi would host
Namibia and Kenya respectively, or the matches would take place at the
World Cup qualifying weekends as originally scheduled.

“We make this request in the interest of fairness, as at the moment,
Nigeria and Malawi have same number of points (5) and, for Nigeria to
play TWO DAYS before Malawi in each of the two important qualifying
games in June will give undue advantage to the Malawians,” the letter
concluded.

Amadu added: “We see the FIFA Confederations Cup competition as a key
tournament, but we also know we have to qualify for the 2014 FIFA
World Cup finals, as priority. It is important to us to go to the FIFA
Confederations Cup and then return to Brazil a year later for the FIFA
World Cup finals.”

Oscar Pistorius can leave South Africa for international competitions

Posted on 7:36 AM by Unknown
A judge has ruled that Pistorius, the Olympic athlete charged with murdering his girlfriend on Valentine's Day, may leave South Africa for international competitions. However, there are significant conditions to Pistorius' travel rights; he must file travel plans with authorities at least a week before departing, and he must surrender his passport within 24 hours of returning to South Africa. Oscar Pistorius can leave South Africa.

According to his attorneys, Pistorius has no immediate plans to compete in any international competition, but he may need to run in the future in order to raise money for his legal fees. Pistorius' attorneys have long maintained that he is not a flight risk, and that he needs the ability to compete in races in order to remain financially solvent.

Pistorius is facing severe financial difficulties because of his attorneys' fees. Local South African media reports have indicated that he has explored selling his racehorses and other assets in order to pay his legal bills.

Police have indicated that they have no interest in striking any sort of plea deal with Pistorius, meaning they will pursue charges of premeditated murder. He maintains that he shot her by accident, believing that she was an intruder.

Pistorius has been free on a bond of 1 million rand (about $113,000) for the last month. The case has been continued until June 4, and Pistorius is under court order to avoid his home and all witnesses involved in the case. He must also report to a police station twice a week and abstain from alcohol

EXCLUSIVE: FBI probe into alleged corruption in international football

Posted on 6:46 AM by Unknown

FBI has cooperating witness for football fraud probe: sources

An FBI probe into alleged corruption in international football has recently intensified after investigators persuaded a key party to be a cooperating witness, U.S. law enforcement sources said.
Trinidad and Tobago's National Security Minister Jack Warner views the 50th Independence Day parade in the capital, Port of Spain in this file photo taken August 31, 2012. REUTERS-Andrea De Silva-Files

They said that the witness is Daryan Warner, the son of former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner. The sources declined to further discuss the role of Daryan Warner, who could not be reached for comment.
They also would not say who might be charged, if anybody, or when. While the exact scope of the investigation is not clear, among the matters under scrutiny are two previously reported allegations involving Jack Warner, who is currently national security minister in his native Trinidad and Tobago.

The deepening of the probe indicates that a succession of corruption scandals involving FIFA and other international football bodies in the past few years may continue to cast a cloud over the sport for some time.
Jack Warner was formerly head of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), as well as previously being one of a number of vice-presidents of FIFA, soccer's global governing body. He has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

Since at least the summer of 2011, the FBI has been examining more than $500,000 (330,600 pounds) in payments made by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) over the past 20 years to an offshore company headed by top U.S. football official Chuck Blazer. That was a period during which Jack Warner was also head of the CFU, a position he held from the early 1980s until 2011.

The precise reasons for many of those payments is unclear. In 2011, Blazer said that the payments were meant to be repayments to him by Warner of "a significant amount of money" which Blazer said he loaned to Warner in 2004. Warner told the media in Trinidad that the payments were above board.
The Internal Revenue Service has joined in the investigation, which is looking into potential violations of U.S. tax laws and of U.S. anti-fraud statutes, including laws prohibiting wire fraud and mail fraud, law enforcement sources said.
"It's shaping up like a major case," one U.S. official familiar with the matter said.

In a telephone interview from Trinidad, Francis Joseph, a spokesman for Jack Warner, said that neither Jack nor Daryan Warner would have any comment on the investigation. "Nobody will speak to you about that," Joseph told Reuters.

In 2011, Jack Warner told the Parliament of Trinidad: "I will hold my head high to the very end. I am not guilty of a single iota of wrongdoing."

Daryan Warner was first interviewed by the FBI late last year after flying to the United States, a U.S. official said.

PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE
Jack Warner quit his FIFA and CONCACAF positions in June 2011 in the wake of allegations of bribery in a report by a lawyer commissioned by Blazer, a member of FIFA's executive committee and former general secretary of CONCACAF.

The report alleged that Warner collaborated with another FIFA vice president at the time, Mohamed Bin Hammam of Qatar, to bribe Caribbean football officials so that they would back a bid by Bin Hammam to become FIFA's president. Bin Hammam and Warner both have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Bin Hammam's U.S. lawyer, Eugene Gulland, said that while he had heard that U.S. authorities were investigating CONCACAF issues, Bin Hammam had not been contacted about the probe.

When Warner resigned his FIFA position, the organization declared that "the presumption of innocence is maintained" in his case. Spokespeople for the FBI and IRS had no comment on the investigation.

Blazer, who has announced he will not seek re-election as the U.S. member of FIFA's executive committee and will leave the position in May, said in a telephone interview that he had been advised by lawyers not to make any further comment. "I can't say anything at all," Blazer said.

Bin Hamman was banned for life from all FIFA and football activities in 2011 for trying to bribe football officials in the Caribbean in the run-up to the election. His ban was subsequently overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the grounds that while it was "more likely than not" that he was the source of cash distributed by Warner "it is a situation of case not proven."

The ban was then reinstated in December last year for a separate matter concerning "conflicts of interest" while he was president of the Asian Football Confederation.

At one point recently, investigators from the FBI and the IRS travelled to the Caribbean and interviewed a witness regarding the alleged cash payoffs for more than two and a half hours, said a person who was in recent contact with the witness.

Andrew Jennings, a British journalist and author of the book "Foul! The Secret World of FIFA: Bribes, Vote Rigging and Ticket Scandals," said he has had several meetings with FBI investigators working on the case and provided the FBI and IRS with what Jennings describes as confidential documents he obtained related to payments from football organization funds to offshore bank accounts.

A law enforcement source confirmed that investigators had held discussions with Jennings.
In an email, FIFA's media department said the Swiss-based organization was "unaware" of any FBI investigation related to the Americas and Caribbean.

The New York-based FBI squad which is conducting the football investigation is a squad that specializes in "Eurasian Organized Crime." It is unclear why this particular squad is involved in the probe.

Pedro Rodriguez will be out of action for 10 days

Posted on 5:36 AM by Unknown
Barcelona winger Pedro Rodriguez will be out of action for 10 days after pulling a muscle in his leg during Tuesday's 1-0 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifying victory in France, his club said on Wednesday.
Pedro scored the winning goal before being substituted for club team-mate Cesc Fabregas in the 76th minute.

FC Barcelona's striker Pedro Rodriguez runs with the ball

His injury means he will miss this weekend's clash with Celta Vigo in La Liga and perhaps the next game as well.

"Pedro will miss the match this Saturday against Celta and he's doubtful for next weekend's match against Mallorca," said Barcelona in a statement.

In between, the Spanish league leaders travel to France to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, but Pedro was already suspended for that clash.

Van Persie to end his career at Manchester United

Posted on 5:29 AM by Unknown
Robin van Persie has admitted he may end his career at Manchester United. The 29-year-old Netherlands striker says the fact United have a track record in valuing older players such as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes may persuade him to see out his playing days at Old Trafford too.

Robin van Persie of Manchester United looks on
Robin Van Persie

Van Persie told Dutch magazine Voetbal International: "For the next few years I will be at Manchester United - and maybe longer. United could be my last club."

The former Arsenal striker's current United contract will end when he is 33 but with 39-year-old Giggs and Scholes, 38, for inspiration, the striker may be tempted to extend his time at the club.

For the next few years I will be at Manchester United - and maybe longer. United could be my last club.
"You have a number of clubs in Europe where older players can find it good, where they are valued. You used to have that at Juventus and AC Milan, Manchester United today is a good example. So who knows how long I will stay at the club," he added.

"There is a new challenge for me every day at United. My development is an ongoing process. That gets an extra boost when you are surrounded by new coaches and team-mates, all with their own ideas, in a totally new environment."

Van Persie scored twice for Holland against Romania last night to overtake Johan Cruyff's international goal tally. Cruyff scored 33 goals in 48 appearances of a curtailed international career and van Persie is now on 34 goals from 74 caps.

Van Persie is second in the Premier League scoring charts this season with 19 goals, three behind Liverpool's Luis Suarez, and United will be hoping his international form will see him pick up domestically after a spell of just one goal in ten matches for the club.

Ghanian referees snubbed by FIFA ahead of 2014 Word Cup

Posted on 5:07 AM by Unknown
Ghanaian referees have been left out of selected match officials for the journey to the 2014 FIFA World Cup billed for Brazil.

Twenty-one match officials comprising seven referees plus 14 assistants have been pencilled in the continent's prospective list put together by the world soccer governing body, FIFA.

The news will come as bitter pill for Ghanaian 'knights of the whistle' after being overlooked for the Africa Cup of Nations, where only assistants Abdul Salif Malik and David Laryea made the cut.

GNA Sports can confirm that Tunisia and Senegal have a set each (a referee and two assistants), with the rest emerging from Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria, Morocco, Burundi, Rwanda, Eritrea, Nigeria and South Africa.
 Refrees Badge

The list is dominated by match officials who participated at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa including controversial Tunisian Slim Jedidi, whose performance in the Ghana - Burkina Faso semi-final match headlined the lowest moment of the tournament.

There is also a surprise place for South African Daniel Bennett, who came under scrutiny for his interpretations of the rules during the Togo-Tunisia Group D clash at the same tournament.

Algerian Haimoudi Djamel, decorated as the best referee on the continent by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) last year also made the cut; so are Ivorian Doue Noumandiez, Diatta Badara of Senegal, Cameroonian Alioum Neant and Papa Bakary Gassama of Gambia.

According to FIFA, the prospective match officials will take part in a seminar from 27-30 April in Casablanca, Morocco as part of the process to trim the list.

The seminar will focus on areas including protecting players and the image of the game, fair play, guarantee of decisional consistency and uniformity, reading the game (technical/tactical approach) and understanding different football mentalities (knowledge of teams). GNA
