Yakubu Aiyegbeni: Nigeria have a bright future

Posted on 5:34 AM by Unknown
The recent CAF Africa Cup of Nations saw Nigeria, under Stephen Keshi, began the year with a bang, going all the way through to claim their third continental title and thus seal a place at this June's FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013. The feat plunged the entire nation into raptures, and former captain Yakubu Aiyegbeni was quick to pay tribute to the Super Eagles despite not featuring during the African finals.

"It was an exciting campaign for
Nigeria," the 30-year-old Guangzhou R&F striker told FIFA.com. "We had a young team but they put in brilliant performances. The coach has done a good job in moulding the team into a strong unit. It is an achievement which has made all the Nigerian people happy."
The success, according to the former Middlesbrough and Blackburn marksman, provides Keshi's charges with not only a morale-booster but also challenges heading into the eight-nation global showpiece, where they are grouped alongside Spain, Tahiti and Uruguay.

"The team are expected to continue their good form in Brazil in June," continued Aiyegbeni, who is
Nigeria's third highest international goal-scorer with 21 goals from 57 caps. "But after our triumph in the Africa Cup of Nations, we will become a target for rivals, who will be motivated to defeat us. And these are the continental champions of the world so the pressure is greater, but it is good for our youngsters to gain international experience."

Striking prodigies
It proved to be, though, a campaign harder than expected for Nigeria. Keshi's hopefuls opened with two 1-1 draws against firstly Burkina Faso, and then Zambia, before a pair of late penalties from Victor Moses against Ethiopia sent them to the quarter-finals. They proceeded to edge Côte d'Ivoire 2-1, before routing Mali 4-1 to set up a final re-match with an impressive Burkina Faso, where they prevailed 1-0.

Yakubu: Nigeria have a bright future

"African football has made consistent progress over these years, so there were no easy games throughout the campaign. Every rival we played against are strong and our team defied all the odds to win the African title," Aiyegbeni reflected.
With the entire Nigeria team excelling, it was a pair of striking wunderkinds that stood out as the Super Eagles secured African supremacy. Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike finished the tournament's joint top-scorer with four goals, while 22-year-old Chelsea star Moses was twice on target.

"Emenike is a very good striker," said Aiyegbeni of the 25-year-old, "He performed very well. Although I have never played alongside him, I think he is a very talented player. Moses is equally impressive, and the striking partnership formed by these two players should be one of the best during the tournament (Brazil 2014)."

Midfielder Sunday Mba, too, caught the eye with a series of brilliant showings. The 24-year-old Warri Wolves man has developed a reputation of scoring crucial goals, having sealed victory against Côte d'Ivoire, as well as hitting the tournament winning-goal against Burkina Faso.

"Mba has the potential to play in Europe," Aiyegbeni said. "By playing with a top European side, a player can have better chances of playing top level matches like in the African Cup of Nations."

Busy year for Super Eagles
The coming year is, indeed, action-packed for Nigeria, with the FIFA Confederations Cup sandwiched by two crucial back-to-back meetings with Kenya in 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifying. Nigeriaare topping the section also featuring Namibia and Malawi with four points, and wins against Kenya will stand them in good stead as they seek to progress to the last ten in the final qualifying round. Aiyegbeni, however, warned the team against complacency.
He said: "The January's Cup of Nations has shown that in Africa no team can be underestimated. Kenya will be keen to win the games and we should prepare carefully. An opening victory against Kenya will be a timely boost for us ahead of the Confederations Cup."
When asked if Nigeria can improve on their last-four finish at Saudi Arabia 1995, Aiyegbeni gave the thumps-up.
"The team travel to Brazil on the back of the Cup of Nations success so they are inspired to put in good showings on the world stage,” he said. “I am confident our side can live up to the expectations. And above all, we will qualify for the next World Cup."

Nigeria Football Federation bars Journalist Nze, Ugwu from its activities

Posted on 3:36 AM by Unknown

The Nigeria Football Federation has barred two sports journalists,
Messrs Ezeocha Nze and Romanus Ugwu from its programmes, activities
and events until further notice.

Speaking at the NFF Secretariat on Tuesday evening, NFF General
Secretary, Barr. Musa Amadu said the two journalists were no longer
welcome at NFF’s events as they have persevered with campaign of
calumny against the Executive Committee and Management of the
Federation, for no stated reason.

“The NFF considers all journalists to be stakeholders of the game and
we love and respect them as professionals, and even go to some length
to ensure they do their job without any hindrance or molestation.

“However, we have found out over the course of time that Messrs Nze
and Ugwu are committed to hate campaign against the NFF Board and
Management, and we find no reason to continue to accommodate them at
our events and programmes,” Barr. Amadu said.

While Mr. Ezeocha Nze is a correspondent of The Guardian Newspapers,
Mr. Romanus Ugwu represents all-sport daily publication, Soccerstar,
which is in the stable of THE SUN newspapers.

FA Chairmen blast report on ‘drilling’ of Maigari

Posted on 7:20 AM by Unknown
The chairmen of Football Associations of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have lambasted a report in a section of the media on Monday, which claimed that the forum ‘drilled’ NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari during its meeting in Abuja on Saturday, 23 February.

Chairman of the Zamfara State Football Association, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who spoke on behalf of the forum, dismissed the report as pure fiction, having no semblance to what transpired at the meeting and completely in the imagination of the reporters.

“At no time during the meeting did the forum call on Alhaji Aminu Maigari to explain anything, talk less of ‘drilling’ him. The report is outright falsehood, and the reporters should be ashamed of themselves for such blatant lie.

“The meeting was a family affair. We reviewed the Super Eagles’ successful campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and commended the NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, the Executive Committee, Management and the team for a wonderful job.”

Gusau stated that the forum also backed the NFF to win many more trophies for Nigeria from the several competitions taking place this year, given its seriousness and commitment to uplifting Nigeria football.

“We had only words of praise and encouragement for the NFF President, his Executive Committee members and Management. The report that we ‘drilled’ President Maigari is a lie from the pit of hell. It is important that journalists crosscheck their facts before going to press.”

Angel Maria Villar Llona

Stephen is a great example to other African associations of what they can achieve through long-term planning and employing local coaches, and I commend your appointment. I would also like to extend special greetings and thanks to the Nigeria fans present at the final, whose support not only willed their team on to victory but also lit up the match as a spectacle.”

Also, President of the Spanish Football Federation, Angel Maria Villar Llona, in a letter dated 11 February and of similar tone to Mr. Blatter’s, congratulated Alhaji Maigaria and the NFF for the triumph, saying: “The Super Eaglesare back and all the football supporters are bappy for that. Please forward also the congratulations of the Spanish football to the players, technical staff and all the people involved with your national team in this wonderful victory.”

Both Messrs Blatter and Villar Llona are looking forward to seeing the Super Eagles at the FIFA Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil in June.

Nigeria: Golden Eaglets’ star striker loses ‘adorable mum’

Posted on 6:43 AM by Unknown

The death of Mrs. Mercy Iheanacho, mother of Golden Eaglets’ star striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, has been announced.
The 43-year-old Mrs. Iheanacho reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, February 21 at the Enukuku General Hospital in Owerri, Imo State after a brief illness. But the grim news flittered into the camp on Sunday’s morning when husband of the deceased, Mr.  James Iheanacho informed team’s officials who subsequently broke the sad news to the Golden Eaglets’ striker.
Described as the epitome of a dutiful houseful and caring mother, a crest-fallen Kelechi said her adorable mum will  be sorely missed by all and sundry, adding that her death was painful since she was unable to reap the fruits of her hard labour.

“Why me?” Kelechi sobbed after Head Coach, Manu Garba (MFR) in company of other officials, broke the news to him. “Why has this happened to me? Why me? Why now?
“My mother did so much for us especially me and I’m so sad that about this. I spoke with her last week Sunday and I was happy that she was okay, please don’t tell me she is dead!” he added amidst wailing.
Officials and teammates have been consoling the lad who is the Golden Eaglets’ joint-top scorer with Alhassan Ibrahim on 18 goals in all the 20 friendly and international matches played on the road to the team’s qualification for the 2013 African Under-17 Junior Championship in Morocco.

Prayers were promptly held for the repose of Mrs. Iheanacho, with a special request to God to put an end to such untimely death of family and relatives of other members of the Golden Eaglets.
The death of Mrs. Iheanacho came on the heels of the demise of 51-year-old Hajia Fatima Ali-Baba, mother of Golden Eaglets’ midfielder and former captain of the National Under-15 team, Saliu Ali Baba in Bida   last December last as well as that of Madam Iyabo Sarah Adewale, mother of Goalkeeper Adeyinka Adewale in Ilorin on September 5, 2012-four days before Golden Eaglets’ 4-1 thrashing of Niger in Niamey.

“It is unfortunate that we were bereaved with the death of our mums but we can’t question the Almighty God,” an evidently strong Ali-Baba said matter-of-factly. “Our prayer is that our mothers will gain paradise and on our part, we shall continue to do our best to keep their memories alive.”
